IT Leader

About Me

I am an experienced IT leader and self-proclaimed technology junkie. I thrive during SEV1 outages because my brain works best when my team is deep in the weeds of a technical issue. I am professional in the workplace but prefer the comfort and style of a button-up and jeans.

I enjoy spending time with my wife and four kids, speaking nerd with other tech junkies, mission work in Haiti, fishing, and hunting.

Personal Profile

"Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." -Unknown

I have always loved technology. I built my career by being an information sponge. Beginning as a Systems Administrator for a small web hosting company, I quickly progressed through the ranks; proving my abilities, expanding my knowledge and continually striving for more.

I have held varying and progressive leadership roles throughout my career leading up to my current role at one of the most iconic companies in the world as the Director of DevOps - leading the team in charge of the development, management, hosting, and maintenance of its public-facing web presence. Through my experience, I have exposed myself to a myriad of technologies used in a variety of ways. Championing and architecting teams, platforms, applications, infrastructure and networks in both the SMB and the Fortune 500 space, my core focus has been explicitly NOT having a core focus; rather focusing on technology and business technology solutions in their entirety.

A summary of my experience:

  • Proven track record at leading globally dispersed and cross-functional DevOps, Agile Development, Infrastructure (cloud and on-prem), and Enterprise Architecture teams.
  • Successfully applying proven standards to align business goals with that of IT (ITIL).
  • Managing Agile and waterfall projects small and large to accomplish business goals.
  • Developing and managing budgets up to $100M, and showing strong Y/Y fiscal performance.
  • Implementing and managing cloud and hybrid-cloud solutions; with special focus on workloads in Amazon AWS, IBM (Bluemix, ICP) and Microsoft (Azure, Office 365).
  • LAN/WAN design, implementation, and management, VLAN’s, firewalls, VPN’s and other remote access using Cisco, Brocade and Dell technologies.
  • Extensive knowledge with installation, configuration, migration and deployment of many Open Source solutions.
  • Extensive knowledge with installation, configuration, migration, and administration of many Microsoft-based solutions to include: Azure Cloud, Active Directory, Exchange, SQL, Skype for Business, DirectAccess, VPN, Sharepoint, and Office 365.

I am not actively seeking a new role, but am open to hearing about new leadership opportunities in DevOps, Web Application Development, Enterprise Infrastructure (Cloud / On-Prem), Enterprise Architecture, or similar IT functions that will best utilize my experience leading multi-functional and globally dispersed teams to best match business goals with that of IT.

Work Experience

Director, DevOps at General Electric

March 2019 - Present

Responsible for leading a cross-functional team of people working around the globe to develop, host, manage, and maintain the public-facing and internal web presence for one of the most well-known companies in the world. My team consists of the following:

  • Technical Product Managers
  • Site Reliability Engineers
  • Cloud Engineers
  • Web Application Developers
  • Database Administrators
  • DevOps Engineers
  • Infrastructure Architects
  • Automation Engineers
  • DevOps Engineers

As the sole team in charge of architecture, development, infrastructure, operations, security, and innovation - collectively "DevOps" - I've successfully led the team through several projects that have improved process, improved time to market, implemented much needed automation, drastically cut costs, and broke down barriers to create an innovative work culture. Some of my accomplishments include:

  • Successfully led the migration effort between WAF and CDN vendors and handled the decision-making process to bring some of the security and content delivery back in-house - ultimately improving our position in automation, bringing control and expertise back into our team, drastically improving our security posture across many public-facing websites, and reducing operational spend by $.5M/year.
  • Bringing a much needed focus and fostering a culture of innovation and automation to the team, we created and implemented an AI chat bot to automate several repeatable processes needed by developers - reducing waste, eliminating hand off, and speeding up the development process, effectively saving the company $.25M/year.
  • Completely rebuilt infrastructure and application monitoring and reporting. This project was long overdue but drastically helped to improve application SLA's, availability, and user experience. In addition, this has overhauled the method of working for the operations and infrastructure teams away from a reactive state by enabling the team to proactively see issues before they occur.
  • Created a scripted template to almost fully automate the tasks of onboarding and offboarding new web properties into the environment. This has saved the team from repeating past disasters that resulted from human error in the process and saved countless man hours that were spent building the environments and coordinating the many tasks needed to fully complete onboarding and offboarding.
  • Led the effort to centralize documentation and organize IT assets into ServiceNow. A herculean effort, we managed to fully document and import over 80+ web applications spanning Dev, Stg, and Prd into the ITSM database.
  • Actively participated in knowledge and best practice sharing across all Global Functions DevOps Teams through a monthly DevOps review meeting.
  • Volunteered to lead the Corporate Global Functions Team in an effort to promote personal and professional learning. These efforts have resulted in a 28% participation rate across GE Global Functions and included thousands of hours of additional learnings that applied directly to the roles of those that participated.
